Overton 50-Mashall County 34

We had and interesting game last night against the Marshall County Tigerettes. (I have know idea what a Tigerette is.) The scouting report I received said that MC wouldn't be able to handle a full court press. So, we pressed for the first part of the first quarter and they killed us. At one point the score was 17-9. Then we went half court and dominated.

They scored 6 points in the second quarter, 6 in the third, and 5 in the fourth. They hit 3 threes in the first period and none for the rest of the game.

What was most surprising was who scored for us. I figured that my leading scorers this year would be one of my two shooters or my big post. They had 8, 5, and 2 points respectively. My point guard led us with 13 points and I had a freshman come off the bench and score 10 in her first game.

Next game is Friday

Opening Day

We open tonight against Marshall County. I know nothing about them, but I am confident. I am also ready to get started. Sleeping hasn't been easy as I always seem to have basketball thoughts in my head. I pray that I start to rest easy after the real games start.

Lost Jamboree by 4

I must admit, I am not that disappointed. We were disorganized at first, but then settled down. We probably got down by as much as 8 or so, but we fought back. My big post player fouled out in only a half, which was ridiculous. Most officials don't know how to ref with girls her size in the paint. They call everything.

We played zone the whole game and it seemed to work. There were some poor rotations and missed block outs, but the effort was very good.

Opening of the Season tonight (Kind of)

My mother wanted me to start posting about my games again, so here goes.

We play in the jamboree tonight against CPA. They will be more disciplined, be better prepared, and have a gameplan for tonight. I am just hopeful that everyone on our team remembers their shoes.

All that said, I think we'll win the half we play tonight. I am hoping that we have too much size, quickness, and experience.

Southpointe and Tshirts

My father-in-law had a great comment after visiting Southpointe a few weeks back. He thought the preaching was great and that the worship service was also great. But then he said, "The most difficult decision most of the members at Southpointe seem to have on Sunday morning is which Tshirt should I wear?"

I must admit I laughed out loud when he said that. He hit the nail on the head. We are a Tshirt wearing church. I don't think that's necessarily good or bad, but it is the truth. I hope that we don't make people in suits feel uncomfortable.

All that to say, we may not take our dress too seriously (although maybe we should), but we do take our theology very seriously. If we took ourselves too seriously, Southpointe would be like most of the other churches in Nashville. If we didn't take God and His Word seriously, we would probably be a lot like most of the churches in Nashville (unfortunately).

Blogging for Church

I had an interesting talk yesterday with my pastor and a man on our leadership team at church. They are doing a blog for the church and they thought I would be good at writing for the blog. I must admit that I was flattered, but I am not too sure that I am up to the task.

You see, I hate blogs and bloggers. (Yes, I get the irony.) What makes me so important that I other people might want to hear what I think? I certainly don't care what they think. Most bloggers get online to rant and rave about worthless crap. (Once again, I see the irony.) I don't want to be that guy. But they asked me...

A disappointing semester teaching

Change is not an easy thing. It can be so difficult, in fact, that I sometimes feel like I have to make a conscious effort to not discard something just because it's different. I really try and work with change and remain positive instead of moaning and groaning.

When our school decided to go to an alternating block schedule for this school year, I was very skeptical, but I thought it would give me an opportunity to become a better teacher. I worked with an "expert" on block scheduling and tried to redo my teaching techniques a bit in order to become more effective.

Unfortunately, I can now say definitively that I hate the alternating block. As I began to make the review for my students final exams, it became clear how poorly things have gone for me this year. My trig/precal class has covered two and a half chapters in a semester. Now if you consider the fact that in a normal year, we cover around 11 chapters, it becomes rather obvious that we're getting half the work done we used to. All of that makes sense if you consider that we meet every other day.

Why is it that experts in education continue to come back to this idea of teaching on the block. It has never worked well for most schools, but it continues to come back time and time again.
